In Remembrance of those Police Officers who gave their life

HACKETT, Patrick Mark
Constable 1st Class
29 August, 1971.

Constable Hackett was killed in Cyprus while on special duty in that country with the United Nations Civilian Police Force (UNCIVPOL). On the 29 August, 1971 the Constable had driven to Episkopi and Paphos before setting out to return to Polis. Whilst negotiating a number of very sharp and dangerous hairpin bends, his vehicle left the roadway, crashed down an escarpment and overturned several times. Constable Hackett was killed instantly.
The Constable was born in 1940 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 25 February, 1963. At the time of his death he was attached to the Civilian Police Contingent in Cyprus. Return to Honour Roll

RILEY, William Watson McDiarmid, Maurice Raymond
Sergeant 1st Class Sergeant 3rd Class
30 September, 1971.

On 30 September, 1971, Sergeant 2nd Class Riley and Senior Constable McDiarmid attended a dwelling in Mimosa Avenue, Toongabbie to investigate a report that a man had shot his brother to death at that address. On arrival the Police saw the offender Clarke who quickly ran to the rear of the house. Senior Constable McDiarmid followed the offender, while the Sergeant entered through the front door. As the Senior Constable entered through the back door the offender opened fire with a shotgun, inflicting a fatal wound. It appears the offender then went back through the house where he also shot and killed Sergeant Riley. Although the Senior Constable was still alive when other Police arrived, he died a short time later in an Ambulance on the way to hospital. The offender was shot and killed by Police the same day.

Sergeant Riley was born in 1921 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 3 December, 1945. At the time of his death he was stationed at Blacktown. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant 1st Class.

Sergeant McDiarmid was born in 1932 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 9 July, 1956. At the time of his death he was stationed at Blacktown. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant 3rd Class.

McENTEE, John Joseph
Detective Sergeant 2nd Class
27 February, 1972.

Sergeant McEntee died on 27 February, 1972 from a malignant melanoma which had been caused by constant friction of his shoulder holster on a pigmented mole.
The Sergeant was born in 1925 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 27 October, 1947. At the time of his death he was stationed at Waverley. Return to Honour Roll
PARKER, Neville Charles
Senior Constable
12 November, 1972.

About 11am on 23 October, 1972 Senior Constable Parker was driving a Police Special Traffic Patrol vehicle in Rocky Point Road, Sans Souci. Near Fraters Avenue the vehicle hit a wet, greasy patch on the roadway, skidded and collided with a light pole. As a result Senior Constable Parker sustained severe internal injuries. He was conveyed to the Sutherland District Hospital where he died on 12 November, 1972.
The Constable was born in 1937 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 29 February, 1960. At the time of his death he was stationed at Sutherland. Return to Honour Roll
GIBB, Joseph Edward Matthew
Constable
23 April, 1972.

On the afternoon of 23 January, 1972, Constable Gibb was in a Police vehicle with Constable Buckley and another Constable. In Shirley Road, Miranda they spotted a stolen vehicle and gave chase. During a brief pursuit the stolen vehicle drove into a dead-end street where it collided with a fence. Three offenders emerged from the vehicle and ran to a nearby house, with Constables Gibb and Buckley in pursuit. As the offenders split up, the pursuing Police each fired a warning shot into the air. Constable Gibb caught up with the offender he was chasing as he attempted to scale a fence, and was grappling with the offender, the Constable’s service revolver discharged and he was shot in the chest. Constable Gibb was conveyed to the Sutherland District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Constable was born in 1943 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 15 May, 1967. At the time of his death he was stationed at Miranda.Return to Honour Roll
THOMSON, Robert Wayne
Constable
24 March, 1973.

About 8.25pm on 24 March, 1973 Constable Thompson was riding a Police Special Traffic Patrol solo motor cycle along Military Road, Mosman. As he drove through the intersection of Belmont Road a car travelling in the opposite direction made a right turn in front of him. The Constable attempted to lay the cycle down, however its momentum carried it into the turning vehicle. Constable Thompson was killed instantly.
The Constable was born in 1947 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 22 February, 1971. At the time of his death he was attached to the Traffic Branch.Return to Honour Roll
WADWELL, Clifford Henry
Constable
15 April, 1973.

About 3.45pm on 3 April, 1973 Constable Wadwell was riding a Police solo motor cycle home at the completion of his shift. As he was travelling along the Great Western Highway, Greystanes, a car travelling in the opposite direction began to make a right hand turn in front of the Police cycle. Constable Wadwell was unable to avoid a collision, and after striking the front of the turning car was thrown to the roadway. He was conveyed to the Blacktown District Hospital for treatment and later transferred to the Prince Henry Hospital where he died on the 15 April, 1973.
The Constable was born in 1952 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 17 May, 1971. At the time of his death he was attached to the Traffic Branch.Return to Honour Roll
GILL, John Thomas
Sergeant 2nd Class
12 May, 1973.

About 6.50am on 12 May, 1973 Sergeant Gill left his Hurstville home to drive to work at Campsie Police Station. On finding his car wouldn’t start the Sergeant pushed it about seventy metres to attempt to start the vehicle on a downgrade. He sat back in the driver’s seat and collapsed. A neighbour called the Ambulance which conveyed Sergeant Gill to the St George Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Sergeant was born in 1952 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 12 April, 1948. At the time of his death he was stationed at Campsie.Return to Honour Roll
McINTOSH, Christopher Andrew
Constable 1st Class
22 September, 1973.
Shortly after 9.30am on 22 September, 1973 Constable McIntosh was riding a Police Special Traffic Patrol solo motor cycle from Bankstown Police Station to Lakemba. As he was travelling along Wattle Street, a panel van travelling in the opposite direction made a right turn in front of the Police cycle. Constable McIntosh was unable to avoid a collision and the cycle struck the side of the van. The Constable died as a result of injuries received in the collision.
The Constable was born in 1946 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 8 August, 1966. At the time of his death he was attached to the Traffic Branch. Return to Honour Roll
DOMINISH, Robert Thomas
Constable 1st Class
16 February, 1974.
About 2am on 16 February, 1974 Constable Dominish was driving home at the completion of his shift. As he drove along High Street, Penrith, a car travelling in the opposite direction crossed to the incorrect side of the roadway and collided head-on with Constable Dominish’s vehicle. The Constable died later that morning at Penrith District Hospital from injuries received in the collision.
The Constable was born in 1946 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 16 June, 1963. At the time of his death he was attached to the No.21 Special Squad, CIB. Return to Honour Roll
