BM – Bravery Medal.
The 3rd highest bravery decoration in the Australian Honors and Awards system and is awarded for acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances.
On the morning of 19 August, 1991, Mr Mackie attempted to detain and disarm an offender following an armed robbery at Eastlakes Golf Club. Mr Mackie, who was in the club house at the time of the robbery, pursued the armed man on foot and onto a bus. Displaying a high sense of public duty and disregarding his own safety, he grappled with the offender until they both fell off the bus. Despite being threatened with a gun, Mr Mackie maintained his efforts and during the struggle, a shot was fired at close range. An attempted second shot by the offender failed when the gun jammed. Although shaken off, Mr Mackie continued the pursuit on foot and by car until it was clear that the offender had escaped. By his actions, Mr Mackie displayed considerable bravery.
This medal was granted on the 7 May 1992
Col’s wife, Patricia, passed away on 11 September 2013.
