Constable Jeremiah BURNS

Unknown

Merton

16 January, 1837

The death of Constable Burns (possibly Byrne or Byrnes) is mentioned in Colonial Secretary; NRS 905, Main Series of letter received, 1837 [4/2371.3 Letter No. 37/5856] as having died on 16 January, 1837. Unfortunately there are no further details and as such it is not yet known if this death was on duty or not.

On the 4 July 1837 in a short list of police appointments, the Colonial Secretary’s Office announced: “Merton – James Charlton to be Constable from the 31st May, in the room of Jeremiah Burns, Deceased”.

(Merton was a private village established from about 1824 at the junction of the Hunter and Goulburn Rivers opposite where the town of Denman now stands. It was also the centre of a designated Police District at that time. The population in 1841 was 137.)

At the time of his death the constable was stationed at Merton.
