Little is currently known of the death of Sergeant Murphy other than a brief account in the Barrier Miner dated 6 July, 1949, which reported that “Detective Sergeant Robert Stanley Murphy dropped dead while eating his lunch at Balmain Police Station. When he went on duty on Monday morning Sergeant Murphy told other detectives that he had not slept during the night because of pains in his chest.

 

At the time of his death the sergeant was aged 51 years and was stationed at Balmain. He had previously served at Deniliquin. He was survived by his wife Gera and daughter Gloria.
