In the early hours of 18 December, 1938 Constable Murphy went to Leinster Street, Paddington following a complaint of two intoxicated men causing trouble. He located one of the men and as he attempted to arrest him, the offender struck the constable a heavy blow to the right eye. Constable Murphy managed to subdue the man however he was again attacked and kicked in the groin and the offender escaped. The offender was quickly arrested by Sergeant White. On 10 September, 1940 the constable was admitted to the Mater Hospital, North Sydney, for a tumour on the right side of his brain. He died seventeen days later. The tumour was attributed to the assault in December, 1938.

 

 

The constable was born in 1895 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 1 July, 1919. At the time of his death he was stationed at Paddington.
