On 1 May, 1947 Constable Malone was one of two Police Public Safety Bureau motor cyclists engaged in escorting a military convoy along the Bathurst Road to Sydney. While negotiating a bend in the road near Medlow Bath, just north of Katoomba, the motor cycle outfit collided head-on with another vehicle. As a result of the accident Constable Malone sustained severe head injuries and died in the Katoomba District Hospital a short time later.

 

The Canberra Times of 2 May, 1947 reported the death of Constable Malone.

 

CONSTABLE KILLED ON PATROL DUTY

Sydney, Thursday. Constable J. H. “Stake” Malone, a former international Rugby Union footballer, was killed on the Great Western Highway, near Medlow Bath, today. Malone, who was a member of the Police Road Safety Bureau, was riding a motor cycle on convoy duty with trucks loaded with explosives, when his machine collided with a car. He leaves a widow and two young children.

 

The constable was born in 1912 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 29 April, 1935. At the time of his death he was attached to the Public Safety Bureau.
