OATH OF OFFICE – Police Officer

Every Police Officer must take the Oath of Office when they start their career at the Goulburn Police College, NSW. There are two types of swearing in procedures that can be taken. One is for the person who has a Religion belief, and the Oath of Office is sworn while holding a Bible, the other is referred to as the Affirmation and is for those who are not of a Religion faith where the use of a Bible is not used.

OATH OF OFFICE – POLICE OFFICER

I……………………DO SWEAR – THAT – I WILL WELL AND TRULY SERVE – OUR SOVEREIGN LADY THE QUEEN – AS A POLICE OFFICER WITHOUT FAVOUR OR AFFECTION – MALICE OR ILL-WILL – UNTIL I AM LEGALLY DISCHARGED – THAT I WILL SEE AND CAUSE – HER MAJESTY’S PEACE TO BE KEPT AND PRESERVED – AND THAT – I WILL PREVENT TO THE BEST OF MY POWER – ALL OFFENCES AGAINST THAT PEACE – AND THAT – WHILE I CONTINUE TO BE A POLICE OFFICER – I WILL – TO THE BEST OF MY SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE – DISCHARGE ALL THE DUTIES THEREOF – FAITHFULLY – ACCORDING TO LAW.
SO HELP ME GOD.

For those who do not believe in any Faith or such, they can take the Affirmation where the use of a Bible is not required.

AFFIRMATION – POLICE OFFICER

I……………………DO SOLEMNLY – SINCERELY AND TRULY DECLARE AND
AFFIRM – THAT – I WILL WELL AND TRULY SERVE – OUR SOVEREIGN LADY
THE QUEEN – AS A POLICE OFFICER WITHOUT FAVOUR OR AFFECTION – MALICE OR ILL-WILL – UNTIL I AM LEGALLY DISCHARGED – THAT I WILL SEE AND CAUSE – HER MAJESTY’S PEACE TO BE KEPT AND PRESERVED – AND THAT – I WILL PREVENT TO THE BEST OF MY POWER – ALL OFFENCES AGAINST THAT PEACE – AND THAT – WHILE I CONTINUE TO BE A POLICE OFFICER – I WILL – TO THE BEST OF MY SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE – DISCHARGE ALL THE DUTIES THEREOF – FAITHFULLY – ACCORDING TO LAW.

Both the above oaths are very similar in context and the only difference is the changing of a few words at the start, and the omitting of ‘So Help Me God’ on the Affirmation Oath.

As the Royal family have to stay out of politics, why is it the queen’s peace when the police are under politicians?

    • This is due to the Crown, which is given the Queen on her coronation, which is the highest order in the land. Remembering that whether there be a Queen or a King on the throne, the Crown is the symbol of God’s authority given to the wearer and they are also the head of the Church of England via the ancestry and obligation of the Crown.
Therefore, the Queen must remain neutral but she is allowed to reprimand a Prime Minister and remove him or her from that position of authority if the Queen believes, within the Bill of Rights and Magna Carta, that the present Prime Minister is causing her subjects unconstitutional harm, including them going against the Bill of Rights and Magna Carta, via her Letters Patents and Proclamations.

  • Can someone please give legal definitions of “HER MAJESTY’S PEACE“, “OFFENCES AGAINST THAT PEACE” and “WITHOUT FAVOUR OR AFFECTION – MALICE OR ILL-WILL

    • Do no harm to others nor to their property. Treat others how you would want/like them to treat you.

  • I am trying so hard to understand this oath confusion. Is there anyone that can actually disclose facts in laymens language.
I am just trying to understand, firstly, why the oath ever needed to bbe altered. I accept, reluctenly the removal of religion reluctently but why all the manipulation around Her Magesty Queen Elizabeth II and her ascendent thereafter.
This is what keeps our adherance the the 1901 contitution complete with referendum approved alterations.
I respect the law and feel so bad you do your job but judges and lawyers belittle your efforts and effectivness. I do understand how that along with the contemp some public disrespect your authority could lead to some justifiable anger.
    But not the oath.
What we see and hear happening lately with all these improptude regulations being called laws and willingly enforced by some officers.
I am not an antagonist, well maybe a tad, but this is a genuine desire to understand our current place in the minds and action of All Australian Police.
I have never felt more readily threatened by the actions against our freedoms.
At what if any point does an officer have the right to conscientiously object without fear of dismissal or worse.
    Thank you for reading.
I have tried to raise this elsewhere but eah enquiry seems to attract idiots and take my post in an agressive nature.
Thats not me. I just want to know what is happering with our assumption that we are protected and served by our law inforcement

    • if you google Her Majesty’s Peace, peace = Law in legal terms

      wikipedia says this:

The legal term peace, sometimes king’s peace (Latin pax regis) or queen’s peace, is the common-law concept of the maintenance of public order. The concept of the king’s peaceoriginated in Anglo-Saxon law, where it initially applied the special protections accorded to the households of the English kings and their retainers.

  • Law says, with regards to peace, that is against all violent acts and/or prevent by discharging to the best of a police officer’ skills without intent to do so without prejudice. In God We Trust ( Parliamentary Law ). And/or Our Sovereign Lady, The Queen. Malice or Ill Will is intent to go against the duties of a Police Officer faithfully according to law. It is the duty of all Police Officers to be aware of changes in all laws.

I would have tought the Oath would have been more in saying ” they swear to honour the Truth of the Law of the Land ” and not that of keeping the Peace.. Sounds as if all they can do is Keep the Peace. Prevent protats & Riots..as it does say ” according to that which surrounds keeping that Peace” It’s certainly openned my eyes to some things as to the meaning of the Oath
